Nursing homes are charged with providing skilled care to our most vulnerable
loved ones – the elderly and the severely injured. Unfortunately, poor supervision
and training and inadequate staffing at some facilities cause additional harm to residents.
Our firm has achieved significant recoveries for nursing home residents who have suffered:
- Pressure sores
- Broken bones
- Medication overdoses
Failure to Prevent Pressure Sores
An 83 year old man was sent to a skilled nursing facility after suffering a severe stroke.
He was unable to move or speak. In order to prevent the development of painful pressure
ulcers, standard nursing practice required that he be turned and re-positioned in bed
every two hours and that his heels be floated off of the bed. The nursing home staff failed
to follow these rules, and the patient developed pressure ulcers on both of his heels.
The ulcers became infected and caused the man to become septic. After his death, I filed
a lawsuit on behalf of his family against the nursing home alleging neglect. The jury found
that the nursing home was negligent and awarded his estate $1 million in damages.
